A case of great casting for a star on the comeback trail or just an obvious ratings stunt? Whatever you want to call Britney Spears’ guest spot on “How I Met Your Mother,” critics and viewers seemed to approve of the wig-wearin, red light runnin’ pop wreck’s appearance on the sitcom and now, word is she’ll be back for more.
Although Fox Studios won’t confirm the rumor, the show’s exec’s have made it clear they’d love to have Britney Spears back for another go, considering her first appearance brought in a record 10.6 million viewers.
And her castmates also seemed impressed with Spears’ professionalism and acting chops. That is, all except one.
According to the initial story, Neil Patrick Harris, who plays the girl-crazy Barney on the show, wasn’t as enthused as his co-stars about the idea of Britney Spears returning to the sitcom. Harris was quoted as saying, “She’s not an actress. She played a role for a week, and did a really nice job, but the workload involved with doing memorization and the purging of comedy over and over is really, really hard.”
Not an actress? Hasn’t this guy seen “Crossroads”?! C’mon.
Harris reportedly went on to say, “I’m in the minority that our show does not need stunt casting in order to succeed. I worry that if they start “Will and Gracing” us too much, that the show will suffer.”
But shortly after the Doogie Howser diss hit the press, Neil Patrick Harris changed his tune, blaming the statement on a writer who he alleges twisted his words. Harris issued the following statement in response to the increasing number of headlines about his assessment of Britney,
“It seems that yesterday a writer took some quotes of mine and speculated an opinion about their intent. As I have said all along, Britney did a great job on the show. She really did. In fact, we are all hoping that she returns rather soon to reprise her role as Abby.”
To his credit, an AP editor agreed that Harris’ had been misrepresented in the story.
But now it’s likely Neil Patrick Harris and the rest of the “Mother” cast can rejoice in the news that Britney will be returning for another episode. A source close to the show has revealed to People magazine that Brit is returning and that, “the show is ecstatic and so is Britney. She had so much fun the first time around she really wanted to come back. It was a mutual decision to work together more.”
“Will & Grace” be damned ya’ll! Britney’s back!
